Content and Promotions Coordinator

This position provides an excellent learning opportunity for students who may be new to working within an IT setting. We provide extensive training for all new staff around technical concepts, troubleshooting strategies, and customer service skills that they will need in the position. We encourage applicants who may have limited IT experience, but who are eager to grow, to apply!

The Interview

What to Expect

Content and Promotions Coordinator interview candidates will meet with a small panel made up of the current Outreach and Engagement team staff and the team supervisor to discuss how their skills and experiences are fitting for the job. The interview will last about one hour, and will include some general questions as well as some that are specific to their exeperience communicating with diverse audiences.

Sample interview questions

  • Describe any experience you have managing social media accounts. Have you ever managed a group or public page?
  • Describe a time you needed to communicate in writing with a diverse audience. What approach did you take to make sure your message reached your audience?
  • Who do you see as Student Tech Services’ target audience? What characteristics do they have in common and how do we reach them effectively?

About the Team

The Student Technologies Services Outreach and Engagement team is responsible for promoting services provided by STS and engaging and collaborating with students to identify and promote tech resources on campus that support and enhance the student experience. The team produces communications for Student Technology Services, including composing original content, creating graphic design elements, and managing the the STS website and social media accounts.

Terms of Employment

  • Must be a currently enrolled UC Berkeley student with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • The required period of employment begins in October 2019 and runs through at least May 2020.
  • Offer is contingent upon successful clearance of:
    • Criminal background check
    • Driving record check with a currently valid US driver's license (preferred)
  • Must be available to work:
    • Fall 2019 and Spring 2020: 10-15 hours/week
    • Shifts must be a minimum of 2-3 hours long and fall within Monday-Friday 9am-5pm
  • Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance evaluation by supervisor(s)

Job Description

Engages current students and alumni 
  • Participates in STS events and activities, working closely with student staff to learn about student interests and needs
  • Plans and tailors social media and other communications for diverse student audiences
  • Participates in annual recruitment cycle for student staff, including reviewing student staff job descriptions for consistency, tone, and accessibility
  • Maintains contact with student staff alumni by maintaining mailing lists, LinkedIn accounts, and sending regular communications
Contributes creatively 
  • Composes original content to share stories of STS services and events that engage students, staff, and alumni via email, social media, and the STS website
  • Researches campus workshops, tech talks, and other opportunities and writes creative and engaging social media posts to encourage students to attend
  • Draft email communications to students, student organizations, advisers, staff, and alumni
  • Works closely with the graphic designer to develop content and designs for print and web materials
Supports team operations 
  • Follow through with team requests made via internal ticketing system and update status of requests in a timely manner
  • Assists with all team operations, including printing and distributing materials
  • Helps update and manage STS’s social media platforms and website
  • Attends weekly team meetings
  • Documents Outreach and Engagement projects using STS's internal wiki
Examples of projects and daily tasks 
  • Work with SAIT student staff to create staff profiles shared on social media
  • Compose news stories and other content for the STS website
  • Collaborate with the Visual Communications Designer and STS staff to create flyers for recruitment
  • Assist team lead in identifying, documenting, and tracking relationships with student organizations, student services departments, and advisers
  • Document STS events and student staff using photography, videography, and appropriate editing software

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to create a strategic and impactful outreach and engagement plan that connects undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds and identities to the range of tech support services available on campus
  • Demonstrated experience around connecting underserved/underrepresented communities to critical resources
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including writing and editing copy, creating compelling narratives, and visual storytelling
  • Clear understanding of the fundamental elements of impactful photography and videography
  • Strategic thinking around how to leverage social media accounts (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter) appropriately and effectively
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with clear attention to detail
  • Availability and scheduling flexibility to attend designated STS events and activities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in journalism, copy editing, or writing for clients
  • Previous experience in photography, videography, and/or video editing for marketing and/or narrative purposes
  • Experience with managing social media accounts and/or Facebook advertising
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and/or Lightroom particularly valuable; experience with Illustrator and/or InDesign also helpful
  • Proficiency with Google Drive
