The Interview

What to Expect

Visual Communications Designer interview candidates will meet with a small panel made up of the current Outreach and Engagement team staff and the team supervisor to discuss how their skills and experiences are fitting for the job. The interview will last about one hour, and will include some general questions as well as some that are specific to their design process/skills and design background. All  candidates are given a design assignment which they complete and bring to the interview to discuss. Candidates who have shared examples of previous work will be asked to discuss it during the interview. They will also be asked to bring an unofficial transcript to verify that they meet the minimum GPA requirement.

Interview questions

  • Critique this flyer: what design elements work and how could you improve the layout? what changes would you make and why? What would you keep the same and why?
  • Describe a marketing, advertising, or creative project you’ve worked on in the past.
  • Who do you see as Student Tech Services’ target audience? What characteristics do they have in common and how do we reach them effectively?

About the Team

The Student Technologies Services Outreach and Engagement team is responsible for promoting services provided by STS and engaging and collaborating with students to identify and promote tech resources on campus that support and enhance the student experience. The team produces communications for Student Technology Services, including composing original content, creating graphic design elements, and managing the the STS website and social media accounts.

Job Description

Design publications and graphics 
  • Designs and produces all printed materials to promote STS services and programs to students
  • Designs digital content for use on the STS website and social media platforms
  • Develops images, graphics, and icons for use on STS's website and print materials
  • Uses Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign) to create and mock up materials
Contribute creatively 
  • Works with the team and STS staff to develop designs that support communication goals
  • Takes and edits photos to be used in STS publications or on the STS website
  • Creates photo ID badges for STS staff
  • Collaborates with STS staff to create signage, fliers, or other materials to support STS events and activities
  • Works with the team to update and develop new pages for the STS website
Support team operations 
  • Follow through with team requests made via internal ticketing system and update status of requests in a timely manner.
  • Assists with all team operations, including printing and distributing materials
  • Helps update and manage STS’s social media platforms and website
  • Attends weekly team meetings.
  • Documents Outreach and Engagement projects using STS's internal wiki.
Examples of projects and daily tasks
  • Design materials to promote STS services on social media
  • Update and create pages for the STS website
  • Organize photo shoots for individuals and teams
  • Create a flyer for the STS annual job fair

What You'll Learn on the Job

  • How to use Open Berkeley, Berkeley’s content management system for campus websites
  • Communication skills and how to share and receive feedback on design projects
  • Further expertise with Adobe software
  • In-house design production
  • How to design educational and outreach materials for a large audience
  • How to document processes and projects in Confluence

Required Qualifications:

  • A portfolio of past projects to demonstrate design skill (you will be asked to upload your materials in the application form) 
  • Experience with photography and photo editing
  • Demonstrated experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign
  • Proficiency with Google Drive
  • Ability to attend STS events and activities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in art, design, and/or marketing
  • Extensive knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and/or InDesign
  • Previous experience designing for clients and/or in-house
