Connect to Wi-Fi

Wi-fi Services

Eduroam

Eduroam is the primary secure network available throughout campus, in campus residence halls, at International House, and at University Village.

To connect to eduroam on your personal device, configure your eduroam account.

What to do if you receive a Security Notice

The UC Berkeley Information Security Office may disconnect your device from the UC Berkeley network and/or hosted services if your device does not meet the minimum security standards for networked devices or if suspicious activity is detected. In this case, users will receive a Security Notice from the UC Berkeley Information Security Office. Respond to the Security Notice to restore your network connection.

Using eduroam at other institutions

eduroam(link is external) provides network access at over 2,400 participating institutions in the US and thousands more world-wide. When visiting a participating institution, UC Berkeley students who have configured their device to use eduroam can automatically connect to that institution's network.

Berkeley-IoT (Internet of Things)

While eduroam is the network of choice for phones, laptops, tablets, and desktops, Berkeley-IoT is the eduroam equivalent Wi-Fi network for devices that only work with a shared password. This network will be used most commonly by residents in campus housing to connect entertainment devices (e.g. smart TVs, streaming hubs, and gaming consoles)

To connect your device to the Berkeley-IoT Wifi network:

  1. Identify your device's MAC Address
  2. Create a Berkeley-IoT Device Account(link is external)
  3. Follow these step-by-step instructions

Berkeley-Visitor

Berkeley-Visitor provides basic internet access for visitors to campus who do not have a CalNet ID; it is not recommended for UC Berkeley students. Resources that require connection to the campus network (e.g. campus library resources, departmental servers) cannot be accessed via the Berkeley-Visitor network.

Get Online in Campus Housing

Eduroam is the best option in most campus housing locations for laptops, phones, tablets, etc

Berkeley-IoT should be used for devices like gaming consoles, smart TVs/streaming hubs (like a Roku), and other devices that cannot connect to eduroam.

Wired Connections are available only in special circumstances. See below for more details.

University Village

  • There is one Aruba access point (AP) for each apartment. The location of the AP varies per unit. APs cannot be relocated.
  • Each AP has 3-4 ethernet ports that you can use to connect to the internet via ethernet cable.
  • You must register the device’s ethernet adapter MAC address at socreg.berkeley.edu. Contact the Student Helpdesk if you need assistance.

See here for tips to connect a non-student household member to wi-fi

Intersection Apartments

  • Units have an Aruba access point (i.e. router) with 3-4 ethernet ports available for you to connect to the internet via ethernet cable.
  • In studio apartments, the AP is located in the kitchen. For these units, residents should utilize the ethernet ports that are placed lower to the ground (follow the conduit running from the AP to the baseboard).
  • You must register your device’s ethernet MAC address at socreg.berkeley.edu. Contact the Student Helpdesk if you need assistance.

Note that personal routers are NOT permitted, as they cause interference with the campus WiFi service for other residents.

Residence Halls

The following applies for residents in:

  • Beverly Clearly
  • Channing-Bowditch
  • Clark Kerr
  • Foothill
  • Jackson House
  • Manville Apartments
  • Martinez Commons
  • Stern
  • Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3

If the residence you live in is not listed above, please check with your on-site staff for assistance.

Residents with an Aruba access point (i.e. router) in their living space

  • There are 3-4 ethernet ports that you can use to connect to the internet via ethernet cable.
  • You must register the device's MAC address at socreg.berkeley.edu. Contact the Student Helpdesk if you need assistance

Residents who do NOT have an Aruba access point (i.e. router) in their living space

  • Wi-fi is the best option in these units. If you are unable to connect to wi-fi, contact the Student Helpdesk for troubleshooting. If it is determined that your residence has poor wireless signal, a Student Tech Consultant will help you activate an ethernet port in your room.
  • Students whose devices do not have wireless capabilities should purchase a wi-fi adapter for their device

Note that personal routers are NOT permitted in any residence halls, as they cause interference with the campus WiFi service for other residents.
